A noticeable jump in US Poverty beaconed the President Obama’s first year in office. According to Census Bureau, the poverty rate rose from 39.8 million people (13.2%) in 2008 to 43.6 million people (14.3%) in 2010! The US states boasting highest number of poor people in an increasing order are Georgia, Arkansas, New Mexico, Arizona and Mississippi.
To address various profit related concerns, how many of us know that each year some hundred billion pounds of foodstuff is thrown away. The calculations put it that this food could have whetted seven hundred ‘starved’ souls in different parts of the world. The situation is far from agreeable even in US if we go by the findings of Bread for the World Institute, 3.5 % of US families suffer from ‘HUNGER’. This figure of 3.5% translates into a scaring 9.6 million Americans [along with three million children!] who either daily eat too little or skip meals for up to two days!
I am already feeling too shattered about this harsh and heinous thing called Poverty eating away our vital entrails. I have lost my appetite and feel that before I come up with any prescriptive remedy, I should myself give up wasting food and water. I am also giving up from today those food and wine and beer binges that appear so ridiculous in the face of our impoverished brothers and sisters struggling to find a morsel to their aching mouths.
The lot of children living in poor conditions is not very admirable. 1 in every 5 American children is growing up poor and broken in spirit. Actually 29 million US children live and breathe in poverty. Though there are food stamps funded by government to help these children get food, they often do not have the needed knowledge to make healthy nutritional decisions.
I pray that all of the fellow brethren in America and elsewhere should take a pledge to do what is within their power to bring smile to those who are deprived of such basics as food and cozy shelter.
